The legend says that in 1953 the University of Tennessee Pep Club sought out a live coonhound mascot, clarifying that "This can't be an ordinary hound. He must be a 'Houn' Dog' in the best sense of the word." Blue Smokey was chosen, and UT began its tradition of having one of the best live mascots in college sports. The likeness of Smokey on this comfy white tee was created in 1980 and used for the next twenty five years in Knoxville.
